What I offer

I provide personalised one on one online tutoring in university level maths with myself, Michael, at a cost of $75 per one hour session.

I have been previously employed as a lecturer in the Mathematics Departments at the University of Auckland and AUT. I have lectured a wide variety of maths courses, and am extremely competent teaching any undergraduate maths course.

Why one on one tuition?

Universities are great places to learn, and can offer fantastic resources, but one thing that is often lacking is a personal, one on one approach to learning.

Any mathematician will tell you that the easiest and most efficient way to communicate mathematical ideas is through one on one communication. Having a full hour to discuss concepts and work through problems under close supervision will give me an in depth understanding of where you are at and what to focus on.

Everyone comes to university with different abilities and different mathematical backgrounds. Having someone who takes a personal interest in your learning, and has the time to guide you through course material at a level that is perfect for you will undoubtedly make your study more efficient and effective.

 FAQs

  • I am proficient in teaching any undergraduate maths course (including engineering maths, maths for commerce, etc). As the syllabus for these courses tends to be very similar at all universities in the country, your location doesn’t matter.

    I also may be able to help with some postgraduate courses. Contact me for more information.

  • I have spent 6 years as a lecturer at the University of Auckland and AUT, where I lectured a wide variety of maths papers. I have also been tutoring university level maths online for a number of years. During this time I have developed a teaching style that has helped many students achieve their goals in their maths courses.

  • I am located near Raglan, in the Waikato region. This makes it unfeasible for me to travel to any main centres. If you are willing to travel to me then we can probably make it work. Please contact me for more information.

  • The past few years have seen a huge increase in the usage of online learning tools, and learning online for at least part of their study has become the norm for current university students.

    In my personal experience, the most important factor in effective learning (especially with maths) comes from one on one communication. This is irrelevant of whether it is in person or online. Being able to continually gauge the understanding of the student makes it much quicker and more efficient to communicate the necessary concepts.

    I have had great success teaching online, just as teaching in person.

  • Please, before you come to me, make yourself aware of the many learning resources provided by your university! These may include lecturer’s office hours, help rooms, special workshops, etc. In my experience, these are great resources and usually under-utilised! For many people these will be more than adequate.

    However, everyone is different, and has different circumstances. Many students will benefit from consistent one on one tutoring. Mathematics is communicated most effectively one on one, I can see in real time what you understand, and proceed at your pace. As I work for you, I can provide you my full attention during each hour long session, and I can go into depth on topics as needed. I don’t need to rush off to the next person.

  • No! I’m happy for you to book as required. This may be a regular session each week of the semester, or just a single lesson to help prepare for a test.

    There is no commitment to continue at any stage (outside of my cancellation policy).

  • You are free to cancel any booked lessons up to 12 hours before the designated start time. After this time I reserve the right to charge for no shows.

  • I may be able to make something work, please contact me and I’ll see what I can do.

  • I am based in New Zealand, and have extensive experience teaching university level maths in New Zealand. In general, I only tutor students attending a New Zealand university. On rare occasions, I may be able to tutor students attending universities with curriculums similar to those in New Zealand, please contact me to discuss this further.
